Jeff Goldsmith Joins Essent Health Care's Board of Directors

NASHVILLE, TN - December 15, 1999 - Essent Healthcare has named nationally recognized Healthcare Consultant Jeff Goldsmith, Ph.D., to its board of directors. "Jeff's extensive knowledge of the healthcare industry will provide invaluable support as Essent creates its network of hospitals," said W. Hudson Connery Jr., President and CEO of Essent Healthcare. Essent Healthcare is a hospital company created to operate community hospitals in growing rural and suburban markets. Essent hospitals will form alliances with nearby tertiary care facilities to provide long-term stability for the hospital and broad health care services for the community it serves. Goldsmith is a seasoned veteran in the healthcare industry with 24 years experience. He is currently a healthcare consultant, president of Health Futures, Inc., and is an associate professor of Medical Education in the School of Medicine at the University of Virginia. Goldsmith received the Corning Award for excellence in health planning from the American Hospital Association's Society for Healthcare Planning in 1990, and the Dean Conly Award for best healthcare article three times from the American College of Healthcare Executives. He is a member of the editorial board of Health Affairs and a board member of the Cerner Corporation, a healthcare infomatics company. From 1982 to 1994, he served as National Advisor for Healthcare for Ernst & Young and provided strategy consultation to a wide variety of healthcare systems, health plans, and supply and technology firms. Prior to joining Ernst & Young, he was director of planning and government affairs at the University of Chicago Medical Center and special assistant to the Dean of the Pritzker School of Medicine. From 1973 to 1975, he worked in the Office of the Governor of the state of Illinois as a fiscal and policy analyst and special assistant to the state budget director.

Goldsmith has been a lecturer in the Graduate School of Business at the University of Chicago, at the Harvard Business School, the Wharton School of Finance, Johns Hopkins University, Washington University and the University of California at Berkeley. He earned his doctorate in Sociology from the University of Chicago and a bachelor's degree from Reed College. Essent Healthcare is a new hospital company founded through a partnership between W. Hudson Connery Jr., the former chief operating officer for HealthTrust, and Thoma Cressey Equity Partners, one of the nation's leading venture capital firms. The company is headquartered in Nashville, TN.
