Physician Foundation Asks Jeff Goldsmith to Produce White Paper on Future of Medical Practice.

The Boston-based Physicians Foundation, created in 2003, has retained Jeff Goldsmith to prepare a White Paper on the Future of Medical Practice. This White Paper will discuss the major trends affecting medical practice, including the impending retirement of the baby boom physicians, the increasing trend toward salaried employment of physicians and the re-envisioning of healthcare payment under the Affordable Care Act, and identify both policy and operational measures that can be undertaken to strengthen medical practice in the face of these trends. Dr. Goldsmith expects to conduct extensive interviews in the next three months, as well as survey the literature on practice trends and innovations, and produce a report mid-March, 2012.

Jeff Goldsmith on the Future of Radiology and Medical Imaging

The March issue of the Journal of the American College of Radiology carried Jeff Goldsmith’s Moreton Lecture to ACR in May of 2010. This lecture both celebrates the success of radiologists in leveraging and improving imaging technology, and challenges the profession to innovate in three important areas: making diagnostic imaging more definitive through technological refinement, collaborating more successfully with other disciplines which border radiology and experimenting with new payment models to create value for patients and payers. You can read the article at this link. These issues are explored in depth in Bruce Hillman and Jeff Goldsmith’s new book, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice: How Medical Imaging is Reshaping Health Care (Oxford U. Press, 2011). You can purchase this book at Amazon.
