Physician Foundation Asks Jeff Goldsmith to Produce White Paper on Future of Medical Practice.

The Boston-based Physicians Foundation, created in 2003, has retained Jeff Goldsmith to prepare a White Paper on the Future of Medical Practice. This White Paper will discuss the major trends affecting medical practice, including the impending retirement of the baby boom physicians, the increasing trend toward salaried employment of physicians and the re-envisioning of healthcare payment under the Affordable Care Act, and identify both policy and operational measures that can be undertaken to strengthen medical practice in the face of these trends. Dr. Goldsmith expects to conduct extensive interviews in the next three months, as well as survey the literature on practice trends and innovations, and produce a report mid-March, 2012.

Debate on Accountable Care Organizations Heats Up

Jeff Goldsmith is a long standing advocate of healthcare payment reform. He is also a vocal critic of one of the most prominent ideas for restructuring healthcare payment contained in the 2010 Affordable Care Act. He participates in an online debate about the fate of “accountable care” with Donald Berwick and Tom Scully, two former administrators of the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) in the January 23, 2012 edition of the Wall Street Journal (link). He also came to Boston last October to debate the merits of the ACO with Dr. Timothy Ferris of Partners Healthcare (Massachusetts General Hospital) (link). Mr. Goldsmith’s alternative to the ACO may be found in his January 2011 article in Health Affairs entitled: “Accountable Care Organizations: The Case for Flexible Partnerships Between Health Plans and Providers”
